Person Window

Once a particular clergyman has been selected, either by choosing a name in the Persons Index, by following a link from either the Locations or the Bishops window, or by using the Search facility, a window will open headed by the name of the person concerned and a date range. The Person Window contains four elements:

The heading. This comprises the name of the person, followed by a date range in brackets. On the right hand side of the screen is found the 'CCEd Person ID', which is the unique reference number for the person in the Database. This number should be used in all citations. The date range consists of the earliest and latest dates of records relating to that person in the Database, not his dates of birth and death. It is also important to note that in the case of the record of a vacancy, which for obvious reasons will often be the last record associated with an individual, the date is derived from the appointment that ensued from the vacancy, rather than the date that the vacancy occurred.
Comments. This section contains a variety of information. Some of the details here have been taken from other sources, such as the lists of Oxford and Cambridge graduates and published lists of clergy, which supplement the information contained in the Database itself. Some of this information may be superseded or corrected as this phase of the Database project continues and as further phases are launched. Further details of the sources that have and have not been used in constructing the Database can be seen by clicking here. Other details in the Comment box are internal notes by the Database team about possible linkages or identifications of persons or of queries about evidence records. These are being made available as some users may find these provisional judgments helpful in their own research.
Evidence. This provides a summary list of the evidence records relating to the person that are contained in the Database. This list provides summary information about the date, the clergyman’s name, the clergyman’s office, the event, and the location to which the event relates. By clicking on the text icon on the right hand side of each summary, you can view the complete evidence record, which appears in a pop-upRecord Window. By clicking on a heading, you can re-sort the list of evidence records in ascending or descending alphabetical or numerical order.
- Date. The year only is given in the summary list, which is arranged in chronological order. Please be aware, however, that, at present, records in the Database before 1752 are recorded in old style, with the year beginning on 29 March. Thus, a record for 14 February 1715 will be entered with the date 14 February 1714 and will be displayed before records for 29 March - 31 December 1714.
- Type. This section of the list provides an abbreviated indication of the type of evidence record. The most common forms of evidence record are Appt (i.e., Appointment, with an indication of the type of appointment record following in brackets), Vac (i.e., Vacancy, with an indication of the type of vacancy following in brackets), Ordi (i.e., Ordination), Libc (i.e., Liber cleri - this type of record includes all lists which provide evidence that a clergyman is holding a certain office at a certain date), and Dispensation.
- Name as recorded. This gives the surname and forename of the clergyman as recorded in the original record. For details of the conventions adopted when extracting records for the Database, please click here. Spellings in individual records will often vary from each other and from the person’s Database name, as recorded at the top of the page.
- Location. This section of the list gives the name of the parish or other location relating to the event recorded in the evidence record. Click here to see the Database definition of Location. The spelling of place names is as given in the original records. By clicking on a location, it is possible to view a complete list of summary records of events relating to that location. For some records, notably ordinations, this section of the summary list will be blank.
- Office. This section of the summary list gives the office of the clergyman as given in the evidence record. In the case of ordination records, it gives the clerical status to which the clergyman has been ordained.
